Christmas Lights
20th December 2004
Last Christmas we managed to get some Christmas lamppost lights installed around the shopping parade opposite St Peter's church, but we were unsuccessful in getting any for the Central Avenue parade. The council budget is very limited for this, but we have pledged £400 out of our own funds towards a Central Avenue display, and hope we shall have more success this year. As reported in our Summer Newsletter, the Christmas tree we planted and lit on the Central Avenue roundabout died after being vandalised but we intend to replace it in time for some Christmas cheer.

29/06/04 Central Avenue Post Office in West Molesey scheduled for closure
Post Office Ltd have announced that they propose to close the Central Avenue Office in October. Two years ago Molesey had four Post Offices. Then the Bridge Road Office was closed. The Hurst Park Office has recently closed for an unspecified period to allow rebuilding of The Precinct shopping area (not yet started). Now, with the impending closure of the Central Avenue Office, Molesey will be left with only one Office (Walton Road) for all its 20,000 inhabitants. Details here.

17/02/04 Hurst Park Precinct (new Tesco)
The meeting on 12 February of the full Planning & Licensing Committee approved the redevelopment of the Precinct by the developers Barton Finch. The vote was unanimous apart from the Molesey East Councillor, Conservative David Wright. The developers hope to complete the new store by the autumn. See the Hurst Park Precinct page here.

28/01/04 Former Molesey Sewage Farm site
This site, bordering Molesey Heath and accessed from Approach Road, is currently allocated in the Elmbridge Local Plan for housing development. There is no logic to this position. If you look at a map you will see that all the land to the south of the River Mole/Dead River line is in Green Belt – except for this area. There is no obvious border, and if forms an integral part of Molesey Heath. There is no rationale for treating it separately.

It appears that this land was allocated for housing some years ago to meet some quota – but it was never anticipated that actual development would take place, as the land is technically contaminated below ground level. The Local Plan specifically recognises this, and states that no development can proceed without a full investigation of the extent of contamination and the cost of remedying it.

There are unfortunately moves afoot within the Council to progress the development of this site. Whilst we fully appreciate the need for affordable housing, however, the MRA believes that this site is wholly inappropriate for housing, and we are committed pressing for measures to safeguard its current use – preferably by getting in incorporated into the Green Belt at the earliest opportunity.

12/01/04 Hurst Park Precinct (new Tesco)
The North Area Planning & Licensing Committee gave approval on 12 January to the application for redevelopment of the Precinct by the developers Barton Finch. The full Planning & Licensing Committee, which meets on 12 February, has the final say. The important question of opening hours and delivery times for the new Tesco was left for that committee to decide.

The MRA make further comment about this issue in the Newsletters. For more latest news of this development, see local press and local council websites. As and when more definite news is available, it will appear here. See the Hurst Park Precinct page here.
