Magical Molesey - 6th December 2007 20th November 2007

Traders from Walton Road, with the support of the Molesey Residents Association, ReFresh and Elmbridge Business Network, have organised a festive evening of late night shopping and Christmas activities on Thursday 6 December from 5.30 to 9 pm. There will be activities taking place in the area extending from Hush Maternity up to The Meat Team.

Traders have committed to stay open for the evening and will be doing something special to contribute to the festivities. Many are offering discounts and special offers, and doors will be open for mulled wine, mince pies and other Christmas goodies. The traders have nominated Molesey Hospital as the charity to benefit from the event and will have collection points in their shops for donations.

Father Christmas will be walking up and down, ringing his bell and ReFresh has organised groups of carol singers to sing at different points up and down the Walton Road. There will be a children’s Fancy Dress Competition, to be judged outside Woolworths at 6 pm by Nigel Cooper, Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Molesey Residents Association and balloon sculpting/face painting outside The Card Collection. There will be a competition for the ‘Most Festive Window’, also judged by the Deputy Mayor, with a first prize of a magnum of Champagne, donated by Bosworths. Molesey Local History Society will also be showing an exhibition of ‘Former Large Houses in Molesey’, hosted by Tudors.

The Residents Association has also organised a ‘Secret Santa’ competition, which will run throughout December, and will encourage shoppers to take a closer look into shop windows. Children will have to find twelve Santas hidden in the window displays, each with a letter on them, to make up a phrase that has something to do with Christmas. So far, three prizes have been donated for this competition, tickets for The Screen at Walton, a family ticket to Hampton Court and the first prize of a family ticket to a theme park, donated by Lloyds Bank.

We hope there will be something for the whole community to enjoy and that this festive evening will give a welcome boost to local shops.

Letter to the Molesey News and Mail about Car Parking Charges 10th June 2007

Letter from Councillor Mike Axton

To: The Editor, Molesey News and Mail

I would like to respond to the letter from David Wright (News and Mail, 30 May) about the Molesey Residents Association (MRA) and the introduction of car park charges in Molesey.

It is disappointing that Mr Wright continues to maintain that the MRA supported charges in Molesey. This is simply not the case. We opposed charges precisely because of the undesirable knock on effects, which we predicted at the time, and are now seeing. But in the end a majority of Council's 60 members decided to bring them in against our wishes. Since then we have focussed on trying to secure better arrangements for Molesey.

What is not explained in Mr Wright's letter is the fact that the key decision to introduce charges throughout Elmbridge was taken by the Council back in December 2004. And at that meeting MRA and Walton Society Councillors proposed that if charges were to be introduced, the lower rate of charging should apply equally to all the Borough's car parks. It is regrettable that our proposal was rejected by other Councillors. The fact is that if David Wright and his fellow Conservative Councillors had supported us, the charge for using Molesey car park would now be 25p, instead of the 50p rate imposed by the current Elmbridge Cabinet.

What is important now is how we can work together to improve the current situation to the benefits local residents and shopkeepers. We still believe that if we must have charges it should be at the lower 25p rate that applies in places like Claygate. We also want free parking reinstated on Saturdays. Instead of prolonging this debate we want to work with Conservative colleagues at Elmbridge Borough Council so that, together, we can bring this about.

Mike Axton
Molesey Residents Association Councillor
